Kharpocho Fort

Kharpocho Fort (meaning "King of Forts" in the Balti language) is a historic citadel perched high on a rocky cliff directly overlooking Skardu city and the Indus River. Built in the late 16th century by King Ali Sher Khan Anchan, the fort served as a formidable military stronghold due to its strategic high-altitude position. A short but steep uphill hike leads visitors to the wooden structures, ancient stone ramparts, and a small mosque within the complex. Reaching the fort rewards travelers with incredible 360-degree views of the entire Skardu Valley, surrounding sand dunes, and high mountain ranges.

• Elevation: Approximately 2,300 meters (around 7,500 feet) above sea level (rising roughly 1,400 feet above the valley floor).

Hike Duration & Difficulty:

• Duration: Approximately 30 to 45 minutes uphill hike from the base near Skardu Bazaar.
• Difficulty: Moderate (steep, winding mountain path).
